Ok, so I wasn't aware of the fact that the Augustine "Classic" strings are infamous for their poor intonation and that they've been like this for decades. I guess the questions is this: Why do they keep manufacturing this junk?
I should have done a search online before buying. That's what happens when I decide to try new strings on a whim. The G-string in particular is so poorly intonated that it is practically useless.
Maybe these strings would be fine if I made a compensated saddle but why bother when many other classical guitar strings work fine with a standard, un-compensated saddle (apart from the ENTIRE saddle being compensated by it's placement of course).
Do not buy these strings unless you want your G-string to be out of tune at pretty much every position except open G.
I needed some new strings for my concert guitar. The ones I had on it were more than a year old and sounded dull and lifeless.
The Augustine Concert Red strings have a great gauge for standard tuning. They sound very lively and really show the sonic nature of your instrument. With these strings my guitar sounds like I remember it when I made some recordings with it: bright and articulate.
In this price range, it is hard to get a better string then Augustine, They produce a good sound and are well made. Not as good as Hannabach, in my opinion but Hannabach are double the price. If you want a set of strings that are cheap and top quality these are sure to impress you. Thomann sell these 25% cheaper then anywhere else.
These strings are slightly higher tension than other medium tension strings in the market, which I personally like. The bass strings sound quite shiny on my flamenco guitar but the trebles still have a good round sound and sustain. I haven't noticed any tuning or intonation problems so far, so I'm gonna go for a second set and I'll be trying the other variants as well very soon.
There are better strings out there, but at this price this is one of the best if not the best value for money I've encountered so far. Recommended!
I play gigs so I change my guitar strings regularly. Every time I buy an accessory from Thomann, I order an Augustine set to keep as a backup in my guitar bag. I like the sound and I play comfortably with this medium tension strings (Concert Red).
I play jazz on a Cordoba Fusion 14 Maple, and these strings were my choice for a lower tension classical string to give me more bend and easier, faster runs up and down the fretboard.
They feel great and make fast soloing a little easier than the blue Augustines that I have used in the past. Vibrato is also easier.
Well-balanced sound for a surprisingly long time after changing strings, and I love that there are different tensions available depending on player preference.
