Used on some (non K&M) stands in order to counter balance my heavier mics.
Most mic clutches tend to give over time, and this counterweight is the ideal counter to that. I don't think you'll ever be able to perfectly balance with one, but they take a lot of the stress out of the central clutch rubber.
Simple to install too - remove anything from the mic stand's boom, slide this on, reassemble. Solid weight and can be used to settle arguments with drummers.
Many microphone boom arms lack a counterweight to balance the microphone. I've seen people using extreme force to tighten the main locking screw to try to stop the boom drooping, which can damage the washers. With proper use of a counterweight, far less force is required. Two things are required to use this product: Firstly it is important to check that the boom has a diameter of 15mm. Secondly, it must be possible to slide the counterweight on to the pole. For a telescopic boom, I remove the plastic hand grip off the end (which can require a strong grip to twist it off) and plug the tube with a 15mm end cap (available on ebay). The counterweight can then be positioned close to the end if required.
We got one of these to 'upgrade' a hybrid stand consisting of a tall Manfrotto base and a conventional boom arm. The stand now works nicely for drum overhead duties where you wouldn't trust a normal stand to hold up a LDC mic. It's a shame the weight can't go to the very end of the boom arm because most have a lengthy plastic handle in the way but I can't see how else K&M could design the fixture.
I have 2 K&M stands and although they're quite tough mic stands, they would still be put under immense strain when I had larger mics like the SM7B and my L22. I'd see some mic stands with counterweights on youtube and was looking for something like this. These work perfectly. Simply slide the existing black rubber holder off one end and then screw this on. Look really slick and I wish I'd bought 2 in the beginning!
