Files that are for frets are expensive, but this one is for a acceptable price. I'm not a professional guitar builder but with some practice and this file anyone can do fret ends. Go watch thomanns youtube video on how to deal with fret ends and sharp frets in which they show you how to use this file. The file is amazing and gets the job done for a reasonable price. Just remember in the end one good tool makes more sense then 5 cheap ones, it will show on your work!
I fixed up my cheap acoustic guitar. The frets were sharp at the edges and fret height was too high for my liking and affecting my pitch when I press the strings.
After filing and then rub sanding pads over the frets, the guitar feels great and a pleasure to play.
Worth the investment! :)
This is a solid tool with a quality feel. I used it (along with the other two sizes) to dress the frets on my old and worn strat. It worked well, was easy to use, and got the job done to my satisfaction.
Very quality and sturdy file. Used it for frets crowning as well as for filing fret ends and sharp corners. Can be a bit longer, but it is more subjective. Used it on 2 guitars, in total about 35 frets were completed and still it looks like almost new. Expensive, but worth it.
One flat face to protect the fretboard and the cutting surfaces have just the right amount of bite to get the job done neatly. Unless you're handy with a grinder, and can make your own tools, buy this one even if it's just for dealing with the occasional fret sprout.
As a professional guitar builder, I am always on the lookout for high quality tools at a great price! The Hosco fret file hits that mark!
Pros: high quality super fine teeth. Perfect radius inside in the middle with the same fine teeth on two sides and a smooth side on the bottom to protect your fretboard.
Con: It would be nice to have a slightly thicker handle, but it isn't necessary. What is there is very workable.
There are many other "cheap" files available, but the quality simply isn't there.
You can pay more for a fret file, but why should you? The Hosco file is a professional grade tool at a consumer grade price.
Really easy to use without damaging the fretboard or neck. Cheaper than having a luthier file your fret ends. I got the 2mm and 3mm versions. Probably will last me a lifetime.
