I'll start by saying that the build quality and size of the device are perfect!
The main reason I've decided to purchase a launchpad was to make live looping in Ableton easier.
This allows me to do just that without additional bells and whistles of more expensive models such as larger velocity sensitive pads.
However some limitations are still noticable, biggest ones being inability to arm/disarm tracks in the default session mode and not being able to remove clips or record over them without a tedious set up in Ableton.
Another thing worth mentioning, not directly related to this device, is the lack of fixed length audio clips support (only "launchpad" that supports it is Push 2), so don't expect seamless live instrument looping with this device right out of the box as fixed length clips are not supported.
Overall it's a great piece of hardware that can be modified to do just what you want with some tweaking using third party software and inbuilt user modes.
This is a very powerful device for the price, I highly recommend it! The build quality feels great and I have had no problems so far.
Initially I bought it mostly to launch clips, since I also have a nanoPAD for rhythms. However after finding the "Launchpad95" extension scripts I'm amazed what it can do! I love the sequencer modes, but I'm going to need some practice. ;-)
If you want more native controls or just a bigger control surface, it's probably worth getting the Launchpad X.
I am new in music production and wanted something both affordable and easy to carry to take to rehearsals. The build quality is amazing for such a small device. The lights are exellent and the included software has evrything someone needs to get started right away. Also its an amazing way for someone to get started on Ableton. Amazingly helpful peace of gear to improve your workflow and help you learn the DAW better, or start learning its basic fanctions. Being a rookie myself i can assure you that this is the right choice for anyone wanting to get started. Aside from the professional use, it is one of the coolest pieces of gear someone can own!
For the price its a brilliant piece of hardware also for the size. Didn't expect it to be so small but still very happy with the functionality. Works seamlessly with Ableton Live. Missing a few features like being able to arm tracks and so on. If you are not on a budget and want the best functionality, I'd recommend the Launchpad X. Overall a brilliant piece of kit!
