I put these into an old (1981) Squier Strat to give it a more raucous Stevie Ray Vaughan type of sound. They're great. Played through a Fender valve amp, they're exactly the sound I wanted and cheaper from Thomann than the vendors in the UK. I can't comment on how easy they were to fit; I have someone do that for me, but it took him no time at all.
If you find the pickups on your Stratocaster to sound a little thin, these pickups could be just what you need.
Texas Specials are overwound to give a bit more output so drive an amp that little bit harder. The extra windings also lose some of the harshness that you find with lower output Strat pickups.
I ended up mounting these pickups in a shielded guitar body and I was impressed about how silent they actually are. There is virtually no 50 - 60 Hz hum coming through.
The output is a bit louder than your standard singlecoil output.
I did not find them to be as "bell-sounding" as I expected them to be.
All in all the offer a great sound full of character.
huge sounding set of pickups... great for studio work and live gigs... put as soon as you go into a studio they really become the best pick ups out there! would definitely recommend them.
These pickups have been fitted to a standard mexico made strat and it has brought the guitar alive. The finish of the mexican strats are great, however they are let down by the pickups. This has changed that. It is easy to get a Stevie Ray style tone, but they still sound great clean.
About half a year ago I installed this set of Texas Specials in my Fender Player 70th Anniversary Strat. Pickups on that guitar sounded dreadful as the middle pickup didn't have the reverse polarity and not a single noise gate was of help. With these installed - the guitar really got to shine.
The crisp, funky but not ear-piercing Bridge pickup. The clear, rich and balanced Middle pickup (never thought that a middle pickup would be that fun to use). The mellow and warm sound of the Neck pickup easily becomes an all-time favourite.
These are some of the best pickups I've heard and played. I strongly recommend trying them out!
