9. Arranging the drum kit

Over time, certain standards have been established on the subject of where to place the components of the drum kit. The kit should be arranged in the most ergonomical manner that you can achieve. You should be able to reach every instrument in the kit comfortably, using the least amount of force possible. Unnatural, tiring positions and movements of the arms and legs should be avoided. Start by placing the bass drum and snare, then continue with the Hi-hat. When that's complete and feels natural, add the toms and finish up with the cymbals. Once you've found a setup that works for you, it can be helpful to mark the positions of the stands and the drum stool on the drum carpet, so you can remember it in the future.

Example of a complete drum kit

The drum kit may be expanded by adding Percussion instruments such as Bongos, Wood Block, Tambourine or Cowbell. The Cowbell in particular can add a driving feel to a rock song if used in the right places. Of course, any combination with other instruments such as electronic pads is also possible.
