It's okay for pre-tensioning your drumheads so they sound somewhat decent.
To use the device to full extent, you need to learn how to do it. That involves experimenting and finding best values for each particular drum (and drumhead) while taking in the ratio between tension of both heads. And in the end of the day, you'll still need to do some fine-tuning by ear.
As a beginner, I've always struggled with tuning my drums. My biggest problem was the flood tom, which almost always had a very long and out-of-tune hum, which I foolishly tried to hide by adding more dampening.
To my surprise, the solution was simple. I got a set of Evans Clear reso heads, and the Evans Black Chrome set, which are in themselves much easier to tune.
I got this tuner at a whim, not knowing much about the underlying concept, but after doing some research, my life has been made a lot easier.
The tuner is very well built, it's quite heavy, which is to be expected. My expectation is that I will never need to buy another tuner for my drums again.
It's easy to use, the tension gauge works very well and is very sensitive, and it reduced my time spent tuning significantly.
I would also like to add that tuners are an absolute must have if you are doing live drum recordings, and my sound engineer was very pleased with the tone I was able to supply when I went in the studio.
Overall I would definitely recommend buying this if you can afford it. If you take care of it, then it will most likely last a lifetime.

Absolutely great stuff. It really helps with pre-tuning so the only think you need is to tune drums to your taste.
One remark - it's really shame that drum head contact surface leaves tiny scratches on the heads, it doesn't look nice especially on the new heads.
I have found the drum dial to be an invaluable tool in the studio. If you have to tune vintage drums with stiff lugs then this is a godsend. There is no way to tune drums accurately if any or all the lugs require different torque (as is so ofter the case with old hardware).
With the drum dial I have managed to to get great results out of a beat up Slingerland kit and my Dyn-O-Sonic snare drum.
Expensive but worth it.
