Tech 21 makes everything top quality, everything is built to last. As with all the other Flyrigs, this a very compact stand-alone solution for live and studio purposes. The thing that drives me nuts is when the manufacturer includes some garbage power supply with the product. Not here. The power supply is very well made with a sturdy cord that won't break and will last for a long time.
I've been putting this thing through all sorts of things for the last couple of months, and I'm very satisfied with the performance of the device. It's obviously made to make some serious noise, but you can dial it down to more reasonable rock levels. The results, however, will be mediocre. Heavy distorted, crushing, Gojira-like sounds is where this thing shines.
Direct to PA or whatever you use for recording is generally the way to go. If you are going to an amp with an instrument cable, go straight into the power section. Going into the front will overload the signal and make everything sound oversaturated and harsh to the ears. This thing packs a serious punch and outperforms most preamp sections I played on.
The sound of the Wasser section is super clean, flat and very neutral. The Feuer section is very precise, clinical, with a unique response in the high mids. If you don't like that character of the sound, don't buy this pedal. There is no way to EQ it out.
Every other section works and sounds very good. The controls are very intuitive, but I advise reading the manual carefully, since Tech 21 stuff is traditionally quirky. You may want to inform yourself about what and how everything does.
All in all, a great piece of gear that I like to pull out when I want some monolithic heavy guitar. Well made, professional sounding, and tons of fun.
